Wildlife and Bird Photography with the 50–200mm F2.8 Lens
The 50–200mm F2.8 IS PRO is designed for flexibility. On its own, it already covers a wide range for both wildlife and nature details. Paired with the MC-20 2x teleconverter, it reaches a maximum 800mm equivalent in 35mm terms – making it a serious tool for bird photography. At the same time, its close focusing distance of just 0.78 metres and Focus Stacking compatibility open creative possibilities for macro and detail shots.
Whether photographing from a hide, waiting patiently for birds at close range, or following an eagle overhead in flight, this lens delivers sharp results. And when a butterfly rests on a flower, you can capture it too – without changing gear.

Handling, Weight and Weather Protection
One of the first things we noticed is the weight. At 1,205 g, the 50–200mm F2.8 IS PRO is remarkably light compared to ”the white lens” 150–400mm F4.5 IS PRO, which weighs around 1,875 g. That is a difference of more than 650 g – and it is noticeable.
With the “white lens”, you usually go out with a clear purpose: to stay at a hide or to focus on specific wildlife. With the new 50–200mm, it’s easy to imagine simply heading for a forest walk, letting the lens surprise you with both wildlife and macro opportunities along the way.
Another important point is the IP53 weather sealing. OM SYSTEM is the only camera brand that officially provides an IP rating for its lenses. This means the 50–200mm F2.8 IS PRO is splashproof, dustproof and freezeproof – reliable even in demanding Nordic conditions where rain, snow and cold can quickly test your gear.

Performance for Birds and Butterflies
For bird photography, this lens shines. With the teleconverter, the 800mm reach gives excellent opportunities to capture small songbirds or distant subjects in fine detail. The constant F2.8 aperture is bright, so even with the teleconverter you don’t immediately lose too much light. Combined with the built-in 5-axis Sync IS stabiliser, shooting handheld is realistic even at long focal lengths – perfect for spontaneous wildlife encounters.
The same qualities make it surprisingly strong for insects. Good stabilisation and a bright aperture make it ideal for butterflies, dragonflies and other small subjects where both sharpness and speed matter.

Rediscovering Macro
Although we are best known for our bird photography, testing this lens brought Kaisa back to the joy of macro. On a walk in the nearby forest, she tried photographing close-up subjects using the 1.4x teleconverter together with focus stacking. The results were excellent: crisp detail, smooth depth of field, and the freedom to capture the small wonders of the forest floor.
Image Quality
Back at the computer, we were impressed by the sharpness. Even wide open at F2.8, the results were noticeably crisp, with excellent detail across the frame. For a lens covering such a wide range of subjects – from macro to super telephoto – this is remarkable.

Beautiful Backgrounds – The Bokeh
Another pleasant surprise was the bokeh. At F2.8, the lens creates a smooth and pleasing background blur that really makes subjects stand out. For bird portraits, this means a soft, creamy background that isolates the feathers in striking detail. For butterflies and insects, the bokeh adds a gentle, dreamy quality that makes even a simple forest flower look like a work of art.
Who Is This Lens For?
If you are looking for a professional-level lens that can handle multiple types of nature photography, this one is worth serious attention. It can complement the 150–400mm PRO lens beautifully, giving coverage from 50mm all the way to 400mm with just two lenses. Or, if you’ve dreamed of the 150–400mm but the budget feels too high, this new 50–200mm is a lighter, more affordable alternative – still sharp, bright and with excellent reach.
