When is the Best Time to Photograph Golden Eagles in Finland?

10 September – 31 March

Golden Eagle photography near Oulu offers a long and varied season, with each part of the year providing its own light, atmosphere, and photographic possibilities. Seasonal changes strongly influence both the behaviour of the Eagles and the visual character of the images.

Early autumn (mid-September – early October)

Early autumn is defined by long days and a lively atmosphere around the feeding site. This period offers dynamic situations and the opportunity to photograph Golden Eagles against rich autumn colours, creating images with strong seasonal character. At this time of year, adult Eagles may bring a young bird to the feeding site, offering chance to observe and photograph interaction between adult birds and a juvenile. During early autumn, Sparrowhawk activity is often high, adding fast-paced action to the hide sessions.

Late autumn and early winter (late October – mid-December)

As autumn turns towards winter, daylight gradually decreases and the landscape begins to change. Snow may arrive at any point during this period, transforming the surroundings and offering clean backgrounds and strong contrast. Despite shorter days, this time of year provides excellent opportunities for powerful and visually striking eagle images.

Mid-winter (late December – early February)

Mid-winter is characterised by very short daylight hours, which often concentrate Golden Eagle activity into a limited time window. This makes mid-winter the best period to observe and photograph interaction between Eagles, including dramatic encounters at the feeding site. Snow-covered surroundings are typical at this time of year, and in suitable weather conditions the surrounding forest can be covered in beautiful white frost, creating a clean and atmospheric winter backdrop for eagle photography. Grey-headed Woodpecker and Black Woodpecker are also often active during this period and regularly visit the area.

Spring (from mid-February onwards)

As spring approaches, daylight increases rapidly and photography sessions become longer again. The resident Eagle pair begins to defend its territory, creating different behaviour and a distinct photographic feel compared to winter. With increasing light levels, capturing action images becomes easier, allowing photographers to freeze movement and photograph more dynamic situations. Softer light and longer days bring a fresh atmosphere to the hides, rounding off the long Golden Eagle photography season.

Other species at the Golden Eagle hides

While waiting for Golden Eagles, there is often plenty of other photographic activity around the hides. Smaller forest birds regularly visit the area, providing additional subjects and keeping the sessions engaging during quieter moments. Natural perches have been placed to create clean and attractive compositions for these birds.

Species such as Eurasian Jay, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Willow Tit, and Crested Tit, as well as Raven, are often present, and Red Squirrel is occasionally seen, adding variety and unexpected moments to the hide experience.

Early autumn offers a special highlight, when fast Sparrowhawks may appear at the site. Their sudden visits often trigger dramatic chases with Eurasian Jays, creating exciting action photography opportunities and adding a strong dynamic element to autumn sessions.

During migration periods, White-tailed Eagles may also visit the area. They are most often photographed between October and December, as well as in March, offering the chance to capture another impressive raptor alongside Golden Eagles.

Golden Eagle photography hides

Our Golden Eagle photography hides are positioned at the edge of a rocky opening within a pine forest, creating excellent conditions for low-angle photography. From the hides, the view opens towards a gently sloping area where approaching Eagles can be photographed close to eye level. The open space and clear sightlines offer particularly strong opportunities for flight photography.

The open setting provides natural front/side light and long distances towards the forest background, allowing the birds to stand out clearly in the images. The spacious opening makes it possible to capture a wide range of compositions, from dramatic action shots to more static portraits.

Premium Eagle photography hides

The Premium hides are designed to improve  comfort during longer sessions. Their most important feature is the large windows, which allow photographers to follow approaching Eagles. Better visibility makes it possible to react earlier, anticipate behaviour, and capture stronger and more precisely timed images.

Inside the hides, photographers have a stable and comfortable working setup with adjustable camera shelves, making it easy to fine-tune the shooting height. Each photographer has two shooting openings, and the hides can be comfortably heated with gas heaters.

The shared entryway offers full standing height, providing space to move, stretch, and prepare equipment, and includes a spacious dry toilet. Smaller forest birds are fed in front of the hides, offering additional photographic targets during quieter moments. Built in 2023, the Premium setup consists of three two-person hides with a common entryway.

Economy Eagle photography hides

The Economy hides are traditional Golden Eagle photography hides. These hides provide a simple and functional setup, with lower height, smaller windows, and fixed camera shelf height. Each photographer has two shooting openings, and bean bags can also be used for camera support.

The hides can be heated with gas heaters. A dry toilet is available in the shared entryway, although there is no standing height. There are no fixed feeders in front of the Economy hides. The Economy setup includes two hides for two and three photographers with a shared entryway.

Both the Premium and Economy hides are located at the same site and offer similar distances and photographic opportunities for Golden Eagles.

Recommended equipment for our Golden Eagle hides

Golden Eagles are large birds and can be photographed with a wide range of focal lengths. The distance to the Eagles typically varies between approximately 20 and 250 metres, depending on the situation and the type of images you wish to capture.

Lenses in the 300–500 mm range work particularly well for flight photography, while longer focal lengths are well suited for portraits and detailed images. For action shots with spread wings, focal lengths around 200–400 mm are often ideal. Teleconverters can also be used when needed.

Smaller birds visiting the area, ranging from Blue Tit to Black Woodpecker and Eurasian Jay, often come very close to the hides, sometimes only a few metres away.

Due to the exceptional vision of Golden Eagles, changing lenses during the hide session is not allowed. Clear instructions for successful Golden Eagle photography are always provided before the session.

Please bring your own tripod head. Cameras are attached either to sliding mounts in the Premium hides or to wooden shelves in the Economy hides, both using a standard 3/8” mounting screw. Tripods cannot be used inside the hides.

What to expect during your hide session

From the parking area, there is an approximately 300-metre walk along a forest trail to the hides. Trail conditions vary depending on the weather. From January to March, and sometimes already in December, proper snow boots are required, as snowfall can be significant and several centimetres of fresh snow may fall overnight.

Please also note that access to the hides is via a forest road. During the winter season, from November to March, driving conditions can be very wintry, and the road may be slippery and/or snow-covered. If you feel uncertain about driving in winter conditions, we recommend considering an autumn photography session, or joining one of our guided photography tours, where all logistics are arranged for you.

The hides may feel cold or chilly when entering in the early morning. Dress warmly at the beginning of the session and be prepared to remove layers as the hide warms up during the day. The hides are equipped with gas heaters, but especially in winter it can take some time for the temperature to rise. Comfortable clothing is recommended, as the session is spent mostly seated. Warm woollen socks are highly recommended, as the floor level inside the hides can often feel cold.

A Golden Eagle hide session is typically long, so please bring your own thermos with hot drinks and snacks to stay comfortable throughout the day.
