Amazing Hokkaido, Japan

This beautiful wintery island offers great photography opportunities. Amazing numbers of very approachable birds can be found. It is almost unbelievable how many Steller’s Sea Eagles and White-tailed Eagles you can see at the same time or how close to Whooper Swans and Red-crowned Cranes you can get!
Birds are the main target during this tour but also the landscapes in north Japan are like in a fairytale. Imagine Swans in a misty lake, mountains in the morning light or simple Japanese trees in the middle of the fields. All this makes Hokkaido very popular destination amongst photographers. Encounter the Japanese culture with extremely polite people, wonderful food and onsens. The whole experience is something you will never forget!

Arctic Seaducks and Puffins on Snow

This photography tour is timed in a way we can photograph wintering King and Steller’s Eiders, but also spring migrants such as Atlantic Puffins and other seabirds on snow in Varanger! Starting in Finnish Lapland, we have the best opportunity to photograph Pine Grosbeaks, Siberian Tits and Siberian Jays as well. This is also a great time for Aurora Borealis!

Birds and Mammals on Snow
22 April – 1 May 2025, Finland
This photography tour is timed very carefully for the northern spring! After the long winter, spring starts to arrive to Finland in April. Migrant birds are returning and resident species are actively claiming breeding territories and partners. There is still plenty of snow on the ground, and, for example, the Black Grouse is lekking on snow. Magnificent Eagle Owl and Goshawk are visiting at the site actively. This is also a great time to photograph the large carnivores of Finland on snow – Brown Bear have awaken from their winter hibernation, and while Wolverine and Wolf stay active throughout the winter, spring is a hectic time for them. With some luck we may also photograph some of the northern taiga forest owl species – Great Grey Owl or Hawk Owl.

Lekking Week
6 – 12 May 2025, Finland
This week is about lekking! In Kuusamo, lekking of Black Grouse and Capercaillie is at its peak and females visit the lekking arenas making the cocks even more active. There are good chances to get photos of mating Grouse during this “hen week”. Elsewhere in Oulu, colorful Ruffs are arriving at the beginning of May! During this week, photography takes place from quality photography hides.

Midsummer Mammals
1 – 8 July 2025
This is a photography tour for keen wildlife photographers! The highlights are Brown Bears especially the cubs, Wolves and Wolverines. The nights are shortest at this time of the year, so during bright nights one can photograph throughout the night when the animals are most active. Nature will be at its most beautiful with flowering cotton grass in swamps and beautiful pale green colors in forests. We have selected the best places for photographing large carnivores in Finland!

Diver Break

This great short photo tour focuses entirely on the beautiful Red-throated and Black-throated Divers. We will visit several breeding lakes of both birds and have a good chance to get good photos of both! We have timed this break for the time of the year when Divers have large young ones, so we will get some nice action photos too. To make most out of the best light of the day we will do both early morning and late evening sessions with divers. During the daytime there will be time for some rest or for some passerine photography at Villa.

Golden Eagles visit our feeding site in Utajärvi very actively when the day is short in mid-winter. Winter Wonderland

This photography tour takes you to blue winter moments and beautiful snow-capped taiga forests of Kuusamo, Finland. Only imagination is the limit for photography in these winter landscapes, and there might be good chances for witnessing Aurora Borealis, a magical and colorful display in the night sky – a show so many can only dream of. Cranes of Izumi
9 – 12 February 2026 – pre-tour for Amazing Hokkaido, Japan tour
Every year, between 10 000 – 12 000 Cranes of four different species gather to overwinter in the coastal fields near Izumi. Two full days and one evening is dedicated to photograph the roosting flights, feeding and socializing of Hooded, White-naped, Common and Sandhill Cranes.

Bathing Snow Monkeys of Jigokudani
12 – 14 February 2026 – pre-tour for Amazing Hokkaido, Japan tour
Photograph the cutest Monkeys in the world! Nowhere else in the world will you find Monkeys enjoying a hot bath in the middle of the mountains. On this extension we spend one full day and one morning in the park with the Monkeys. This will give us a great opportunity to photograph this enigmatic species throughout the day including the first and last light even the park is closed.
