Zimanga – African Safaris and the World’s Best Photography Hides in One Journey

Imagine sitting in a comfortable armchair inside an air-conditioned hide, surrounded by the deep sounds of the African night. In front of you, a large window opens towards a softly lit waterhole, where every ripple and shadow tells a story. When the motion sensor signals activity, the excitement rises—because you never know which animal will appear next. It might be an Elephant, a Rhinoceros, a Lion, or even a secretive Leopard stepping silently out of the darkness. Whatever arrives, a night in a photographic hide at Zimanga is an unforgettable experience, offering unique wildlife moments and images that truly stand out.
If you dream of combining a crowd-free African safari with world-class hide photography, Zimanga offers the perfect solution. This remarkable reserve allows you to experience both traditional game drives and exceptional photography hides in one seamless journey. We have visited Zimanga twice before and were deeply impressed by the quality of the wildlife encounters and photographic opportunities. That is why we feel this is the right moment to return—and we are delighted to offer a new tour to Zimanga from 29 October to 6 November 2026.

We were among the very first guests to visit Zimanga around ten years ago, when accommodation was still outside the reserve. In those early days, our daily routine meant long drives back and forth before we even reached the photographic areas. Much has changed since then. Today, Zimanga offers luxurious accommodation inside the reserve itself, placing guests at the heart of the action from the moment they wake up. This upgrade transforms the experience completely and will make our upcoming journey even more comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable.
Zimanga covers 70 km² in the Mkuze region of South Africa, and it is the world’s first reserve dedicated entirely to nature photography. Here you will find some of the finest photographic hides in Africa—perhaps even in the world. These hides were designed by our friend Bence Maté, with whom we first visited Zimanga back in 2016. The reserve is a superb combination of hide-based photography and classic safari experiences without the crowds. Almost everything you might hope to see in Africa is here: Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Warthogs, Cheetahs, Leopards, and Rhinoceroses. There are also plans to reintroduce highly photogenic African Wild Dogs in the near future. Bird photographers will also be delighted, as more than 400 bird species have been recorded in the area.

A Well-Planned Weekly Programme
Our programme for the week will be busy, as photography sessions take place in several different hides and are combined with safari drives. The schedule is organised so that hide sessions and classic game drives alternate naturally throughout the trip, including overnight sessions in the specialised hides. Everything will be finalised on-site to ensure that every participant has time in all the key hides and plenty of opportunities to join the safaris as well. This balance allows you to experience Zimanga from every angle—both from the intimacy of the hides and from the open landscape of the reserve.
Photography days begin with an early breakfast, after which the different activities are divided into three-hour sessions. In practice, we use the very best morning and evening light for photography. From six to nine in the morning, the group will take part in either a safari drive or a hide session. After a small snack, there is a short break—perfect for downloading memory cards and charging batteries. Lunch is served at one o’clock, and from half past two until half past five we continue with the second session of the day, again either in one of the hides or out on safari.
During our tour, we will have a total of six hide sessions, including two overnight sessions—one night in each of the special hides. An overnight hide session is long but extremely rewarding. It begins around two o’clock in the afternoon and continues all the way until nine the following morning. You can even sleep inside the hide if you wish, although the excitement of the wildlife activity may keep you awake. These extended sessions offer exceptional opportunities to capture rare behaviours and atmospheric night-time images that are impossible to achieve elsewhere.
Introducing the Zimanga Photography Hides
Bence Maté is not only a renowned wildlife photographer but also highly respected for his exceptional hide designs. He created all the photography hides at Zimanga, each equipped with high-quality one-way glass, well-maintained mirror panels, and a rotating tripod gimbal head with Arca-Swiss mount. The overnight hides are especially impressive: small underground structures built like comfortable mini-houses. Inside, you will find a kitchenette, toilet, sleeping area, air-conditioning, and even Wi-Fi. These practical features ensure that photographers can stay focused on creating remarkable images throughout long sessions, day or night.
1. The Lagoon Hide
The Lagoon Hide is an underwater-level photography hide where your shooting angle sits exactly at the water’s surface. Inside, you will find comfortable chairs on wheels, allowing smooth movement without noise. Access is through a long tunnel to ensure that wildlife remains undisturbed. Once inside, you are greeted by a six-metre stretch of one-way glass, air conditioning, electricity for charging batteries, and superb views over the lagoon and both sides of the hide. Black curtains separate the side windows to help control light.

From this hide, you can photograph a wide variety of species, including different herons and waders, African Fish Eagles, Pied Kingfishers and Monitor Lizards. It is also an excellent place to capture Warthogs, and other mammals occasionally visit the lagoon as well. The low angle and peaceful setting make this one of Zimanga’s most atmospheric and productive hides for nature photographers.

2. Mkhombe and Bhejane bird path / reflection hides
These compact drinking-pool hides allow you to control the water level from inside, giving you precise influence over reflections and shooting angles. Each hide features a three-metre viewing window, offering excellent opportunities to photograph both birds and mammals at close range.

A wide-angle lens is highly recommended here. If larger mammals come to drink—such as Elephants, Giraffes, or even Rhinoceroses—they may stand so close to the hide that a telephoto lens will be far too tight. With a wide-angle view, you can capture dramatic, intimate images that reveal both the animal and its surrounding environment. These hides are wonderfully unpredictable, and every session has the potential for unique encounters.

3. The Scavengers Hill hide
This hide is built into a hillside, set partly underground and equipped with a three-metre viewing window. It is an excellent place to photograph eagles and vultures at eye level, giving you a powerful and intimate viewpoint. From here, you can capture striking portrait images as well as dynamic flight shots and dramatic interaction scenes when several birds gather.

With a bit of luck, Hyenas or Jackals may also appear at the site, offering unexpected photographic opportunities. The elevated yet discreet position of this hide makes it one of the most exciting options for photographers seeking powerful raptor behaviour and close-up encounters.

4 & 5. The Overnight Hides – Umgodi and Tamboti
These hides are solid underground structures with excellent views over small drinking pools. The long photography session begins already in the afternoon, when many birds typically arrive to drink. Throughout the night, you may have the chance to photograph a range of mammals, including Buffalo, Rhinoceros, Elephants, Lions, Hyenas and Leopards. The hides feature large windows, giving you a wide and unobstructed view of all activity at the pool.
Inside, you will find everything needed for a comfortable overnight stay: four beds, a kitchenette, a reading corner, a microwave, a refrigerator and an alarm system that beeps softly whenever an animal approaches during the night. A wide-angle lens can be very useful here as many animals come extremely close to the windows, offering thrilling and intimate photographic opportunities.
Zimanga’s accommodation is fully equipped and located inside the reserve, allowing you to rest comfortably after intense and rewarding days in the field. A limited number of single rooms is available for an additional fee. From the balcony of your bungalow, you may see Giraffes and other wildlife passing by. The accommodation area also features a swimming pool with beautiful views across the African savannah—an ideal place to relax between photography sessions.
Your Finnature guide on this journey will be OM SYSTEM Ambassador Jari Peltomäki. In addition, Zimanga’s own experienced guides will be with us throughout the week, transporting us to the hides and joining us on safari drives. Zimanga accepts a maximum of 18 guests at any one time, with roughly half coming from Finnature and the other half from our Spanish partner tour operator. This small group size ensures a personal experience, smooth logistics and excellent photographic opportunities for everyone.

Equipment Recommendations
You will not need to bring your own tripod on this tour, but a beanbag is very useful during safari drives. All hides are equipped with sturdy tripods fitted with Benro gimbals that take an Arca-Swiss type plate. However, you are free to replace the gimbal with your own familiar tripod head—whether it is a gimbal, video head or ball head.
We recommend bringing at least two camera bodies and a selection of lenses ranging from wide-angle to 600 mm. Zoom lenses work extremely well in the hides, as animals appear at very different distances. Keep in mind that subjects in the hides often come very close, so a wide-angle lens can be surprisingly valuable. For safari drives, you will need a minimum focal length of 300–400 mm to capture wildlife effectively.
