Wolverine Finland

One of the World’s Best Destinations for Wolverine Photography - Finland

Finland is widely regarded as one of the very best places in the world for Wolverine photography. Vast wilderness areas, healthy populations, and carefully managed photography sites give photographers rare and realistic opportunities to encounter this elusive predator.

Depending on the season and location, Wolverines can be photographed moving through deep forest, crossing open clearings, or visiting small ponds and wetlands. Spring and summer offer long days and light nights, while autumn brings darker tones and a more dramatic atmosphere. These varied habitats and seasonal conditions make Finland one of the most rewarding destinations for Wolverine photography anywhere in the world.

When is the Best Time to Photograph Wolverine in Finland?

Wolverines are active year-round, but the best time for Wolverine photography in Finland is from late March to October. In March and April, there is often still snow on the ground, offering striking opportunities to photograph Wolverines moving across white landscapes. In April nights are getting shorter. In June-July, the atmosphere changes completely as the land of the midnight sun provides long, quiet nights and soft light for extended photography sessions. In autumn, Wolverines prepare for winter, wearing a thicker coat, while colourful forests add warm tones and contrast to the images.

Where to Photograph Wolverines in Finland?

Wolverine photography sites are located in varied habitats, from dense forest environments to small ponds and wetland areas, allowing for different compositions and visual styles. Depending on the situation, it is sometimes possible to photograph Wolverines moving through forest, climbing trees, or even swimming across ponds, offering rare and dynamic scenes.

In late autumn and winter, nights become very long, and Wolverines often move mainly in darkness, making photography more challenging. There may also be the chance – with good luck – to encounter other large predators such as Brown Bear or Wolf in the same area. Please ask our office for more details and current possibilities.

Recommended Equipment for Wolverine Photography in Finland

Distances to animals from the hides vary, as food is placed at different points to allow a range of angles and compositions. In general, a 70–200 mm lens works well for wider shots, while 300 mm and longer lenses are excellent for close portraits. Teleconverters are useful for extra reach. A wide aperture is recommended, since much of the photography takes place at dusk and dawn in low light.

Please note that changing lenses during a session is not possible, as it would disturb the animals. Each photographer has at least two shooting openings in the hide. A tripod is not necessary, but bring your own ball head, which attaches to the shelf via the standard 3/8” screw provided. And don’t forget plenty of memory cards and spare batteries!

The hides are equipped with bunk beds and dry toilets. At some sites, sleeping bags and gas heating are also available, sometimes with an additional cost.

Bring warm clothes, woollen socks, and preferably dark clothing to blend into the environment. Binoculars are also useful for observing the surroundings. For snacks, avoid rustling packages – animals are very sensitive to sound – and re-pack food into quiet containers or boxes.

Why Book Your Wolverine Photography Through Finnature?

Wolverines are most actively scavenging for food during dusk and dawn, and Finland’s bright summer nights make photography possible almost around the clock.
Overnight hide sessions usually begin with entry to the hide in the afternoon and continue until the following morning, allowing photographers to experience the full range of activity and light conditions. In early spring and autumn, when nights are longer and darker, photography may take place during daytime hide sessions instead.

Finnature works closely with the best Wolverine photography sites in Eastern Finland. While we do not own the hides ourselves, our long-term cooperation with trusted partners allows us to recommend the most suitable hides based on season, light conditions, and your personal wishes. We always recommend booking at least two hide sessions to maximise photography opportunities. For booking, we only need basic details such as the number of nights and participants, and we will take care of the rest. Our partner sites are easily accessible on a self-drive basis, making the experience both flexible and straightforward.

Ready to plan your Wolverine photography experience?

Prices for Wolverine photography hides start from €205 per person per night. At some sites, light outdoor snacks may also be provided during the hide stay, but this varies by location.

Combine Wolverine Hides with Other Photography Hides

Wolverine hides can be easily combined with several other photography hides during the same trip, allowing you to build a varied and highly rewarding wildlife photography experience in Finland.

From the start of the season until mid-June, Wolverine photography can be combined with our Eagle Owl hides, offering excellent opportunities to photograph both elusive mammals and powerful nocturnal birds during one visit.

In April, Wolverine hides can also be combined with Northern Goshawk photography, which is often at its best at this time of year. At the same time, Black Grouse lekking remains active until mid-May, making late April and early May an especially versatile period for combining bird and mammal photography.

During May, for a limited period of around three weeks, Wolverine photography can be combined with our Ruff hides, from roughly the second week of May until the end of the month. This allows you to photograph vibrant spring birdlife alongside some of Finland’s most sought-after mammals.

From mid-August onwards, Eagle Owl photography becomes available again, and from early September, Wolverine hides can be combined with Golden Eagle and Eurasian Sparrowhawk photography, extending your photographic season well into autumn.

In addition to bird photography, Wolverine hides can be combined with other mammal photography throughout the entire season. Wolf photography is possible alongside Wolverine during the full season, while Brown Bear photography can be added from late April onwards, depending on timing and availability. This makes Wolverine hides an excellent base for multi-species mammal photography trips.
