When is the Best Time to Photograph Brown Bears in Finland?

In Finland, Brown Bears are active from mid-April until October. During winter, Bears hibernate and are not visible. Most Bears wake from hibernation in the second half of April, marking the start of the photography season.

The early season in late April offers a rare opportunity to photograph Bears in snowy conditions. At this time, Bears have recently emerged from hibernation and their dark fur contrasts beautifully with the remaining snow.

In May and June, female Bears come into heat and overall activity increases. During the mating season, Bears move more widely, and males may fight over females. With some luck, Bears may even mate in front of the photography hides.

Summer, from mid-June onwards, provides long daylight hours and soft northern light. During this period, females may bring their cubs to the wildlife sites. Early in the season the cubs are still small, although they grow quickly. Flowering cotton grass creates a distinctive and photogenic setting for Brown Bear photography.

In autumn, the changing colours of nature form strong backgrounds for Bear images. At this time, Bears have thick fur and focus on feeding, especially on berries, as they prepare for winter hibernation. The season usually ends in October, when Bears return to their dens.

At wildlife photography and viewing sites, food is used to attract Bears in front of the hides, making it possible to photograph them in natural forest surroundings.

Brown Bear Photography in Different Habitats: Forests, Bogs and Ponds

Photography hides are located in a variety of habitats, creating clearly different photographic possibilities. Depending on the location, backgrounds and situations can change dramatically from one site to another.

Some hides are set in forest environments, offering a classic wilderness feel and opportunities for intimate Bear portraits. Others are located by ponds, making it possible to photograph swimming Brown Bears and reflections on calm water. Bog and cotton grass landscapes provide open views and a strong sense of northern nature, especially in early summer.

Certain hides face the setting sun, allowing striking backlit images, while others are positioned near large trees where cubs may climb, creating dynamic and story-driven photographs. Low shooting angles help keep the surroundings natural and untouched in the images, and close-up portraits are possible thanks to careful placement of food.

Each photography hide usually offers at least two shooting openings per photographer, allowing comfortable working conditions and flexibility in composition.

Feeding at the wildlife sites also attracts other species. Most commonly these include Gulls and Crows, but occasionally Black Kite, White-tailed Eagle, or Golden Eagle may appear. At some Bear sites, Wolverine and even Wolf are sometimes seen as well, adding an element of unpredictability to each session.

Brown Bears are among the most impressive wildlife photography subjects in Europe. The interplay of Bear behaviour, seasonal conditions, and different locations offers outstanding photographic variety.

Recommended equipment for Brown Bear photography hides

The distance to Brown Bears and other animals varies greatly depending on the hide and feeding location. Different distances allow for a wide range of angles and compositions. In general, almost all focal lengths work well for Brown Bear photography.

Shorter lenses, such as 70–200 mm, are ideal for wider views and environmental images, while longer lenses from 300 mm upwards work well for tighter compositions and portraits. Teleconverters can also be used. A lens with a wide maximum aperture is recommended, as some photography takes place during dusk and dawn in low-light conditions.

Please bring your own ball head for your camera. A tripod is not needed. The camera head is mounted on a ground pod or on a wooden plank using a standard 3/8” mounting screw, which is provided in the hides. Remember to bring enough memory cards and spare batteries.

Please note that changing lenses during a photography session is not possible, as this could disturb or scare the animals. There are usually two shooting openings per photographer, and some hides also offer low-angle openings for more natural perspectives.

Most of the hides are equipped with bunk beds, as well as sleeping bags and pillows. Many hides have gas heating, smaller hides usually have only simple bucket toilets.

Bring warm clothing and woollen socks, and preferably wear dark-coloured clothesBinoculars are also useful for observing the surroundings.

Please do not bring snacks in rustling packaging into the hides, as unusual noises can easily disturb the animals. Repack snacks into quiet containers before entering the hide.

Why book through Finnature?

At Finnature, we do not own the wildlife photography hides, but we have worked closely with the best wildlife photography sites in Finland for decades. Because we know these locations in detail, we can always recommend the most suitable hides based on your wishes, photographic goals, and the season. Our booking prices are the same as booking directly with the sites, but you benefit from our experience in choosing the right location.

Different sites offer very different photography opportunities. At some locations, it is possible to photograph all three large carnivores – Brown Bear, Wolverine, and Wolf. Other sites are especially well known for Brown Bear cub photography. Knowing which site fits which goal is key to a successful visit.

The sites offer both photography hides and viewing hides. Photography hides are designed specifically for photographers, with suitable shooting openings and camera supports, while viewing hides focus on observation and a more relaxed experience.

Depending on the site and season, photography can take place during overnight sessions, evening sessions, or, in early spring and autumn, also during day sessions. Most sites are easily accessible on a self-drive basis.

We always recommend booking at least two hide sessions to ensure the best possible photography opportunities. For booking, we need basic information about the type of Bear activity you are looking for, how many nights you wish to book, and how many people are in your group. We know which sites work best in each season and for different photographic goals.

We also help our clients combine different wildlife photography sites into a single trip. By visiting more than one location, it is possible to experience very different habitats, Bear behaviour, and photographic situations during the same journey.

This is where our experience is especially valuable. We know which sites complement each other best, how to time visits according to the season, and how to build a smooth itinerary that maximises photography opportunities without unnecessary travel or repetition.
