Golden Eagle Photography in Finland: Why Autumn Is the Season You Shouldn’t Miss?
Autumn in Finland is a dream season for wildlife photographers. The forests glow in gold, red and orange, morning mists drift across the landscape, and the light softens into long, warm tones. Against this backdrop, the Golden Eagle appears even more majestic, making autumn one of the best times to visit our Eagle Hide.

Why Choose Autumn for Golden Eagle Photography?
- Vivid autumn colours and misty mornings create atmospheric images
- Sparrowhawks and Jays provide fast-paced action between Eagle visits
- Comfortable start times and long daylight hours
- Chance to combine with Black Grouse and mammal photography
- A season of peace and stillness in Finnish nature
Colours and Atmosphere That Inspire Photographers
Every photo taken in autumn stands out. A Golden Eagle perched against fiery birch leaves or gliding through pale morning fog becomes a dramatic scene. On some days the forest is bathed in crisp sunlight; on others, veils of mist create mysterious, moody conditions. For bird photographers, these moments add both challenge and beauty.

Sparrowhawks: The Surprise Stars of Autumn
While waiting for Eagles, the hide offers plenty of action. Small birds gather at feeders, attracting agile Sparrowhawks. These raptors are lightning-fast, chasing Jays in thrilling aerial battles. Many photographers say Sparrowhawks are the highlight of autumn, as their quick flights and sharp turns keep the camera busy all day.

Small Birds and Squirrels Add to the Autumn Charm
It is not only raptors that make autumn photography sessions rewarding. Around the feeding sites, many small birds arrive as well. Great Tits and Willow Tits are regular visitors, and you may even catch a glimpse of the striking Crested Tit. Bright-coloured Bramblings might also stop by, adding variety to your images. Red Squirrels often appear, bringing playful moments to photograph. Autumn is also an excellent time for capturing Jays in flight, their bold colours standing out beautifully against the seasonal backdrop.

Gentle Starts and Long Days of Light
Unlike spring, there’s no need to rise before dawn. In autumn, Eagles are rarely active early in the morning, so entering the hide around 9 o’clock is perfect. The sun still lingers late into the evening, bathing the forest in golden light and giving photographers many hours of varied conditions.

When Planning Autumn Hides: Remember the Short Hunting Break
The season continues until early October, when moose hunting begins. During that time, carcasses in the forest offer Eagles easy food, and we pause our hide sessions for about two weeks. Sparrowhawks often still visit, and later in autumn, when the forest grows quiet again, the Eagles return to our feeding stations.

Extra Experiences in Autumn
If you would like to add more variety to your photography, autumn also offers the chance to visit separate hides for the Black Grouse. Their autumn display is quieter than the famous spring lek, but still a fascinating and atmospheric experience—especially when combined with the glowing colours of the season.

Autumn Is Also Perfect for Mammal Photography
For those who want to expand their portfolio beyond birds, autumn is also an excellent season for mammal photography. Brown Bears, Wolves, and Wolverines are actively preparing for the coming winter, moving with purpose through the forests. Their thick autumn coats are in prime condition, giving them a powerful and striking appearance. Spending time in our mammal hides at this time of year offers a rare chance to capture these iconic animals in rich seasonal light and atmosphere.

If you are planning your next adventure, start by checking our photography tour calendar on the website to see which tours include opportunities to photograph Golden Eagles—alongside many other iconic species of the north.
For those who prefer a shorter experience, or want to add extra days around a tour, you can also book an autumn session in our Eagle Hide. And for even more variety, why not combine your Eagle Hide day with an additional visit to our Black Grouse hides? Together, these hides offer a perfect balance of action, atmosphere, and seasonal colour—giving you an unforgettable portfolio of autumn wildlife images.
