Hokkaido Series – Eagles in action on Hokkaido

Jari Peltomäki’s tips to Hokkaido – Steller’s Sea Eagle action on Hokkaido

Most photographers visiting Hokkaido in winter go to photograph Steller’s Sea Eagles and White-tailed Eagles to Rausu. However, there is even better place to photograph Eagles in action – Lake Fuhren in Hokkaido. Along the road 44 to Nemuro, one café owner feeds Eagles at 9.00 every morning when there is enough sea ice. They take the food pretty far from the shore (about 200-300 meters), but with a long lens this is the place for Eagle action photography.

For this site I recommend minimum 600mm lens. I myself have gotten some strong images of fighting Eagles with Nikkor 800mm lens and with Zuiko 300mm + 1,4 converter (equivalent to 840mm in full frame world).
